After three weeks, everything is finally ready for the escape. To finish off the scheme, Tom writes a letter to the Phelps saying that a "gang of cutthroats" will steal Jim out of the cabin. Huck returns to the house to pick up some butter and finds that the Phelps have gathered a bunch of men to battle the "gang of cutthroats". Scared, Huck sneaks out the window and warns Tom that the men are there, and they must all escape quickly. When the men come to the cabin, Jim and the boys slip out of the hole and head for the river. It was chaotic as they made their way to the raft but then they discover that Tom was shot in the calf. Tom tells them to shove off, but Jim said he would not leave until a doctor has looked at Tom.
These chapters really support my earlier claim that the most recent main idea in the novel is friendship. Tom and Huck risked their lives for Jim, and then Jim is genuinely worried about Tom's leg. I like it a lot, and I'm anxious to see how everything evolves.
